Should I Be Worried About Substance Use If My Child Has an “Addictive Personality”?

Are you worried that your risk-taking, “addictive personality” child might be more susceptible to substance use? Or are you wondering if you even should be worried?

Even though there isn’t a true medical diagnosis of an “addictive personality,” there are definitely certain risk factors that you as a parent can look for in your child to help understand if they’re more susceptible to problematic substance use.

Addiction is a disease, not a question of moral decline

I think it most important to emphasize that an addiction is not a moral issue, but a type of brain disease for which one is no more responsible morally than one is morally responsible for coronary heart disease.
Secondly, it must be understood addiction is controllable, not curable. Control requires constant vigilance, easier over time, but always necessary.
