More People Using E-Cigarettes to Smoke Marijuana

A growing number of people are smoking marijuana out of e-cigarettes, NBC New York reports. Marijuana in liquid and wax forms used in e-cigarettes and vapor pens does not create an odor. Because the devices don’t produce a flame, a person smoking marijuana in an e-cigarette can take a puff and then quickly put it in a pocket.

Local law enforcement officials and drug counselors are concerned about the trend, particularly in minors. Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a survey that showed use of e-cigarettes among middle and high schools students doubled from 2011 to 2012. The CDC found 10 percent of high school students had tried an e-cigarette last year, compared with 5 percent the previous year. According to the survey, 1.8 million middle and high school students said they tried e-cigarettes last year.

Detective Lt. Kevin Smith, who heads the Narcotics Unit for the Nassau County Police Department in New York, said an officer arresting someone on a drug charge who has an e-cigarette is now directed to test the device for illegal drugs.

New York Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal introduced a bill last year which made it illegal to sell e-cigarettes to minors. New York Governor Cuomo signed the bill in September 2012. “Once you try electronic cigarettes, you can become hooked to them, move on to cigarettes and then move on to other drugs,” Rosenthal said.

FYI: Big tobacco has a strong financial interest in e-cigs as well. Nearly every tobacco company (if not all) now also has an electronic cigarette division incorporated into their line of tobacco products.

They put their money where the profits are; the same way almost all of them got into the smokeless tobacco gamer years back. Whether its nicotine in the form of tobacco or e-juice they will continue to play the game that makes them the profits. If and when marijuana becomes legalized they will ALL have that product line as well.

Tobacco companies have the knowledge and means to keep with (and overtake) any new “trend” in the market… That’s all there is to it.

I feel moved to add that I have a niece who recently became a mother. I provided her with a premium e-cig in hopes that she would make the switch for the sake of her new-born daughter. However, she’s so addicted to cigarettes that she’s unable to make the switch to an e-cig. Big Tobacco has it’s way of free-basing nicotine through all the chemicals it adds to an average cigarette, yet e-cigs are frowned upon because they may lead to nicotine addiction? Tobacco (along with all the chemicals they add to it) is full of carcinogens (unlike e-liquid), which makes this all the more ridiculous.

“Once you try electronic cigarettes, you can become hooked to them, move on to cigarettes and then move on to other drugs,”

Really? Either this viewpoint was made in ignorance, or was intended to prey upon it. This is the same reason the FDA had provided for pursuing a ban on three of the largest manufacturers of e-cigs (that they may cause people to become addicted to nicotine).

Unlike the subject of this news story, this simply is not the case! People generally use e-cigs to stop using tobacco thus, they’re already addicted to nicotine (duh). If getting addicted to nicotine is the primary concern, then why not ban tobacco too?

Also, the subject is kids using e-cigs for vaping hash oil and such – where does nicotine addiction come into that scenario? Big Tobacco is definitely behind all this, as they’re losing their consumer base to e-c igs. This isn’t about concern, but money.

Here in Europe the big tobacco companies are smiling broadly as their lobbying of the European Parliament to vote against banning of e-cigarette and slims has paid off.As in the US money was no object in this campaign where lobbyists spread their largesse in the most exclusive of restraunts. Big tobacco know that they are fighting for trade against the illegal tobacco smugglers and governments such as the Irish determined to ban smoking altogether. The e-cigarette has been a Godsend to them as it can now serve several functions, not all legal. If the greed of the pot lovers succeed then who better placed to produce and manufacture cannabis for the dopers than big tobacco. It would be a win win for them. Mr Obama will then have to answer to American parents.
