Michael Bloomberg announced a new $150 million commitment to Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Overdose Prevention Initiative, expanding efforts to combat the overdose crisis in hard-hit states.
The details: The funding will continue work in Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Wisconsin and will expand the initiative to Washington.
- The effort will make opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment available to all incarcerated people in these states and in all of the states’ hospital emergency departments.
- Work will end in Pennsylvania and Michigan, the two states where it started in 2018.
The bigger picture: The announcement brings Bloomberg Philanthropies’ total investment in combating the overdose crisis to $335 million since 2018.
- The initiative works with partners and states to expand access to medication treatment and overdose prevention services in prisons, jails, emergency departments, and other community settings where there are high-risk populations for overdose. It also promotes access to naloxone, effective use of opioid settlement funds, and data, evaluation, and evidence-based policy efforts.
