15 Million People Drive Within an Hour of Using Marijuana: Survey

A new survey suggests 14.8 million people have driven within an hour of using marijuana in the past month. Most impairment occurs within one to four hours of using the drug, HealthDay reports.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety survey found almost 70% of drivers said they think there’s a low chance that a driver using marijuana will be stopped by police.

“Marijuana can significantly alter reaction times and impair a driver’s judgment. Yet, many drivers don’t consider marijuana-impaired driving as risky as other behaviors like driving drunk or talking on the phone while driving,” Dr. David Yang, Executive Director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said in a news release. “It is important for everyone to understand that driving after recently using marijuana can put themselves and others at risk.”

People who drive while high on marijuana are up to twice as likely to be involved in a crash, the foundation says.
