Trump Signs Law Aimed At Preventing and Treating Opioid Addiction

President Trump on Wednesday signed legislation aimed at preventing and treating opioid addiction, NPR reports.

“Together we are going to end the scourge of drug addiction in America,” Trump said. “We are going to end it or we are going to at least make an extremely big dent in this terrible, terrible problem.”

The bipartisan package of bills is designed to improve access to treatment by lifting some restrictions on Medicaid and Medicare coverage. It also promotes the creation of comprehensive opioid recovery centers.

One bill aims to crack down on fentanyl shipments from entering the United States. The measure requires the U.S. Postal Service to collect electronic information on merchandise that arrives in the United States. This would allow customs inspectors to screen packages for fentanyl and other contraband.
