New Tool Designed to Spot “Date-Rape” Drugs

Israeli scientists are developing a new tool to identify “date-rape” drugs, ketamine and GHB, in drinks, the New York Daily News reports.

The device can be dipped into a drink. The scientists said in its final form, it may look like a drink stirrer. They tested their device on cocktails, soft drinks and other beverages. They claim the test is 100 percent accurate. They are also trying to expand the device’s capabilities so it will detect Rohypnol, known as “roofies,” another common date-rape drug.

The device’s developers say they are still working on how it will alert the user to the presence of drugs. They hope it will be available for sale within two years.
