New Jersey Governor Signs Law Allowing Sick Children Access to Medical Marijuana

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed into law a measure that allows sick children to more easily access edible medical marijuana, CNN reports.

Children who qualify under the new law, and whose parents give permission, will be able to use marijuana through tablets, capsules, drops or syrups, the article notes.

In August, Governor Christie vetoed an earlier version of the measure, saying he would only sign legislation that required both a psychiatrist and physician give their approval before a child could join the state’s medical marijuana program. He also insisted that edible marijuana products only be dispensed to minors. The final version of the measure included both of these changes.

The bill was proposed after parents of a 2-year-old girl began campaigning for medical marijuana for their daughter, who has Dravet syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy not controlled by anti-seizure medication.
