’Hackademy Awards’ Announced: ’Nine’ Called Smokiest Movie of Year

The star-powered (but ill-fated) musical ’Nine’ got a thumbs-down as the year’s smokiest movie as part of the annual Hackademy Awards, named each year by Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails.

“Direction of the star-studded PG-13 musical soared far above the wildest expectations of any cigarette marketer and totally beyond anything resembling historical context,” the group said of Nine, which received the “Thumbs Down! Movie” nod. “There were so many smoking scenes packed into its nearly two-hour running time that reviewers had trouble keeping count.”

The Thumbs Down! Actor award went to Nine lead actor Daniel Day Lewis for his portrayals of the “nicotine-addicted Guido Contini,” the group said. Sigourney Weaver was given the Thumbs Down! Actress award for her role in “Avatar.”

Positive nods went to Paramount Pictures’ “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” named the Thumbs Up! Award winner. “Transformers was totally tobacco free, a refreshing surprise in the action thriller genre, and more evidence that the smoke is finally clearing in at least one corner of the entertainment industry,” Breathe California said.
