Congress votes against ACA subsidy extension

Last week, the Senate rejected legislation to extend the enhanced ACA subsidies. And yesterday, the House passed a health care bill that would not address the expiring tax credits.

    • Why it’s important: This all but guarantees that millions of Americans will see a steep rise in health insurance costs at the beginning of next year, barring a last-minute deal in Congress.

The details: In the Senate, both the Democratic bill to extend the subsidies and the Republican alternative that would have created new health savings accounts failed. The House voted on an alternative health care package but declined to consider an extension of the ACA subsidies.

But: Four House Republicans signed on to Democrats’ discharge petition, which will force a vote on a three-year extension of tax credits. However, the vote will not be until early next year, after the subsidies have expired, and it would be all but certain to die in the Senate.
