Colorado Panel Recommends Marijuana Products be Sold in Child-Proof Packaging

A Colorado task force making recommendations on how to regulate marijuana has called for the drug to be sold in child-proof packaging, according to The Denver Post. Marijuana product packaging should not contain logos or ingredients designed to appeal to children, the task force said.

Marijuana products also should not be mixed with nicotine, the group stated. Marijuana and edible products containing the drug should have labels that explain the products’ potency, and list pesticides or fertilizers used in cultivating the drug.

“We’re trying to give the consumer the information so that he or she can make the right decision,” said task force member Dr. Chris Urbina, who heads the state Health Department.

Shops selling recreational marijuana could not advertise anywhere that children would be likely to see the ads, such as television, billboards, radio or general-distribution newspapers. Under the task force guidelines, the stores could not make any health claims about their products. The group recommended the creation of a state website that would educate people about marijuana.

The task force will meet again on Thursday, and then will hand its recommendations to the state legislature. That body is expected to put the recommendations into a bill, which must be passed by May 8.
