Baseball Hall of Fame to Begin Program About Dangers of Performance-Enhancing Drugs

The Baseball Hall of Fame has announced a new program to educate teens and young adults about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs. The program, called Be a Superior Example, or BASE, will begin with online components, as well as an interactive kiosk at the museum in Cooperstown, New York.

This year, players including Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds, each of whom has faced allegations they used steroids, are scheduled to appear on Hall of Fame ballots, according to The New York Times.

Jeff Idelson, the museum’s president, told the newspaper the program had been in the planning stages for several years. “We’re launching it now because it’s taken that long to build the curriculum, the program elements, and find the funding to launch BASE,” he said. “We still need to find more funding to sustain it, but we now have enough to launch it and keep it up and running.”

The museum hopes to raise enough funds to bring programs to different cities, and to hold a national summit of experts and educators on the topic, according to a news release.
