Wyoming Libraries Get Drug Prevention Book

The Wyoming Department of Health has purchased a copy of a new book about raising drug-free kids for every public library in the state, according to an official press release

The book, “How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents” was authored by Joseph A. Califano Jr., founder and chairman of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. Califano is a former member of President Jimmy Carter’s cabinet, serving as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare.

State officials said the book aims to help parents counteract the many unhealthy messages about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs that surround their children.

We often lament that children don’t arrive with owner’s manuals,” said Rodger McDaniel, Wyoming Department of Health Deputy Director for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. “With this book, parents now have available a manual on handling one of the most critical aspects of parenting:  keeping children drug-free.”
