The Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission has warned companies that make and sell e-cigarette liquids to make their packaging less appealing to children, USA Today reports.
E-cigarette liquids are dangerous for children, and can cause them severe harms such as death, seizures and coma, the government regulators told 13 e-cigarette liquid makers and sellers. Some companies misleadingly label or advertise nicotine-containing e-liquids as juice boxes, candies and cookies, the article notes.
There were more than 8,200 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine exposures among children younger than 6 from January 2012 to April 2017, according to the National Poison Data System.
Examples of products mentioned in the warning letters include “One Mad Hit Juice Box,” which resembles children’s apple juice boxes, such as Tree Top-brand juice boxes; “Vape Heads Sour Smurf Sauce,” which resembles War Heads candy; and “V’Nilla Cookies & Milk,” which resembles Nilla Wafer and Golden Oreo cookies.
