25 state attorneys general (AGs) and the City of New York sent a letter to e-commerce platform Shopify claiming that more than 200 online stores who do business using the platform illegally sold e-cigarettes or other tobacco products.
The details:
- The AGs say that the web-sellers made e-cigarette sales in violation of federal, state, and local laws, circumventing age and safety requirements, even after being warned.
- At least 28 illegal e-cigarette online stores were hosted directly on Shopify’s platform, while another 200 used the company’s services to illegally sell tobacco products.
- Shopify’s policies already prohibit merchants from using its services for unlawful activities, and Shopify has taken action against specific online vendors brought to their attention in previous letters.
- But the AGs argue that the scope of the conduct and harm to public health necessitate a more comprehensive solution. They are seeking a meeting with Shopify to ask the company to terminate service to all current and future sellers violating tobacco laws.
