Girl consoling guy laying on her in bedHBO is airing Heroin: Cape Cod, USA, a documentary examining the heroin epidemic sweeping America’s small towns and communities. The video focuses on eight young people with a substance use disorder in idyllic Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Opiate-related overdose deaths have quadrupled in the U.S. since 2001. In 2014, Massachusetts had more than 1,250 deaths from heroin overdose. Today, 85 percent of the crimes on Cape Cod are opiate-related. Known for its quaint villages, lighthouses, and beaches, the picturesque summer vacation destination of Cape Cod has been struck with an epidemic of young people hooked on affordable, easily acquired heroin.

This harrowing film, directed by Academy Award-winner Steven Okazaki, takes an unsparing look at the lives of eight young people with a heroin addiction. These individuals live a life of endless highs, while cycling through stages of rehab, recovery and relapse. Watch it and let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.
