R.J. Reynolds Sanctioned for Camel Ads

Ads published in Rolling Stone magazine for Camel cigarettes violated the 1998 nationwide tobacco settlement by featuring cartoon images, a Pennsylvania judge has ruled.

The Associated Press reported that Judge William J. Manfredi ordered cigarette maker R.J. Reynolds to pay a $302,000 fine or run a full-page antismoking ad in copies of Rolling Stone circulated in Pennsylvania.

The Philadelphia-based judge ruled in a case brought against Reynolds by the state attorney general’s office; at least nine state attorneys general sued over the November 2007 Camel ads in Rolling Stone.
