Growing Number of States and Cities Raise Legal Age for Tobacco and Vaping Products

Illinois has become the ninth state to raise the legal age for tobacco and vaping products to 21, CBS News reports. Hundreds of cities, counties and towns have passed similar legislation.

Last week, Congressman Robert Aderholt of Alabama introduced a bill—the Stopping Consumption of Tobacco by Teens (SCOTT Act)—that would make 21 the legal age nationwide.

“Nicotine is one of the most addictive chemicals known to man,” said Dr. Sharon Levy, Director of the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. “And we know that some kids are getting addicted with really just a handful of uses. Nicotine can interfere with memory and can interfere with learning, particularly in younger individuals.”
